Why SOLAS Compliance Slips

Port calls are tight, crews rotate, and documentation gets missed. These are the five failures we see most during SOLAS and PSC inspections—and how to fix them fast.

1) Expired or Missing Certificates

From liferafts to extinguishers, expired certificates are the #1 trigger for remarks.

Maintain a digital certificate folder and a renewal calendar.

Verify third-party service reports before departure.

2) Liferaft & LSA Deficiencies

Incorrect stowage, poor markings, and out-of-date pyrotechnics are frequent issues.

Schedule annual liferaft service; check HRU expiry dates and painter line condition.

Inspect lifejackets and immersion suits for tears, mould, and light/battery status.

3) Fire-Fighting Equipment (FFE) Gaps

Hydrotest intervals missed, empty spares, damaged hoses.

Hydrotest and refill extinguishers on cycle; maintain foam logs and SCBA records.

Test CO₂/FM-200/Novec systems and tag cylinders correctly.

4) Radio & GMDSS Non-Conformities

Battery replacement overdue, EPIRB/SART not tested, no VDR APT.

Plan annual GMDSS service and VDR/S-VDR APT ahead of port calls.

Keep AIS/NAVTEX logs and ensure MMSI programming accuracy.

5) Calibration & Gas Detection

Uncalibrated gas detectors and gauges can lead to detention.

Perform traceable calibration and keep the latest certificates onboard.

Need Help?

Our certified engineers deliver class-approved LSA, FFE, GMDSS and calibration services across Saudi Arabia & the Gulf. Request a service.
